This course explores the dynamic interplay between painting, poetry, and fiction in 19th c. France and England, including painters and paintings as protagonists in literature (Balzac, C. Brontë, James, Maupassant, Wilde, Zola) and paintings inspired by literature (Delacroix, Degas, Manet, Millais, Sargent, Waterhouse). Themes include narrative and descriptive detail; translation and illustration; theories of artistic media; the artist as a social or anti-social actor; women as artists and models; and the artist’s studio as a literary trope.
