Bailey Sincox (Humanities Council, English, and Humanistic Studies) has received a David A. Gardner ’69 Magic Grant from the Humanities Council, which will enrich her fall 2023 course “Theater in Early Modern London: The Purpose of Playing.”
Students in the 400-level English seminar, which is cross-listed in humanistic studies and theater, will travel to the United Kingdom to experience first-hand theatrical spaces that they study in class, including the recreation Globe and Whitehall’s Banqueting House, the British Library, Oxford’s Bodleian Library, and the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust.
Sincox joined the University in 2022 as a lecturer in Humanities Council, English, and Humanistic Studies. She is the Perkins-Cotsen Postdoctoral Fellow in the Society of Fellows. As a scholar of early modern English drama and performance, her work spans the theater of Shakespeare and his contemporaries, gender studies, reception and adaptation studies (including the stage, film, and the novel), and history of the book.
Magic Grants support ideas that break new ground intellectually and pedagogically and have the potential to change how the humanities are conceived and taught. Magic Projects also support enrichment of Princeton pedagogy, including experiential and field components that take students and faculty outside the traditional classroom setting.
