Close reading of great stories in the formative period of Buddhism, 50 BC to 400 AD. Buddhist literature against the background of religious doctrine and cultural history. Previous lifetimes, rebirth and cosmology, genres of Buddhist narrative, parables, personal quests versus social justice, emptiness, changing conceptions of the Buddha.
