Power and the Professoriate

Back to "Spring 2026" courses

How can examining the ways that power is enacted, distributed, transformed, and contested through the university help us navigate it–as students and workers within it and as members of a society where universities occupy such a prominent place? While this inquiry is especially relevant for students considering academic careers, its insights extend to a range of contexts and reveal how struggles over power in the university reflect and influence comparable struggles elsewhere. Our approach combines theoretical and historical study, hands-on practice in academic professionalization, and collective reflection on goals, commitments, and stakes.
