Thinking Translation: Language Transfer and Cultural Communication

Thomas W. Hare

Back to "Spring 2026" courses

Translation is at the heart of the humanities, and arises in the social sciences too, but the notion that it is simply a transfer of linguistic information from one language to another, is misleading. This course aims to broaden and deepen our understanding of translation and to examine its roles in the past and today’s world, in fields such as anthropology, the media, law, international relations, philology and literature. We will engage in the intellectual problems raised by the transfer of meanings from one language to another and become acquainted with the functions, structures and effects of translation in intercultural communication.
