Brian Steininger studies the literature of early and medieval Japan, with particular interest in the reception of Chinese texts. His research frequently takes up issues of textual transmission, paleography, and the material culture of literacy.

His forthcoming first book, Chinese Literary Forms in Heian Japan: Poetics and Practice, analyzes the societal roles of parallel vernacular and Chinese-style literary idioms in tenth- and eleventh-century Japan. His next book will map Sinological intellectual networks in thirteenth- and fourteenth-century Japan.
